Did the Church (Catholic or Protestant) help or hinder the development of new scientific ideas? Research your scientist using google or wikipedia or the textbook and identify the scientist's discoveries. Was the Church involved in the discoveries? Did the church help the scientist along or was the scientists' faith a cause for their study of nature? Or did the church try to stop the scientific work. If you see no mention of the church in the person's life keep digging. Did he go to church? Find some relationship to write a little bit about. If you really can't find anything then your explanations will talk about the church not being in the way.

Assignment DUE THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18: STUDY the multiple choice questions for a QUIZ. Also, write a body paragraph as I described in class and you took notes in class. Choose one of the main ideas from this Thesis statement. The Reformation caused Europe to change politically, socially and religiously. Because of the Renaissance ideals of humanism, scientific analysis as well as the corruption in the Catholic church leadership, people were ready for new ideas. The Reformation changed Europe politically by allowing kings to gain power, socially by granting women and the poor more freedom and religiously by giving Europeans more options to worship.
Choose one of the main ideas from the above thesis and write a body paragraph giving at least three examples for the main idea you choose (either political change, social change or religious change). Be sure your body paragraph has at least 10 facts in it (name, place, date, event, quote). Also be sure each of your examples has explanation that shows HOW your example proves the idea that Europe changed during the Reformation. HINT: use the words changed, shifted, developed, grew, or other words that show change in your body paragraph.

Assignment DUE Monday, OCTOBER 8: Please read carefully the EHAP review handed out in class. Read the sections slowly and then go back and highlight the important parts of each section. Most of the reading is review but read slowly anyway. At the end of each section, you should be able to list the important ideas, facts and developments of the time period in you mind. If you can't remember the important points of each section after reading them, READ IT AGAIN! Or go back and read your notes again. Spend about 60-90 minutes on the reading. Then write a perfect Thesis statement. Answer ONE of the following questions in a perfect thesis statement. I will put a couple of excellent examples of thesis statements on this page sometime this weekend. Check back and compare what you write to these examples. questions. You only have to answer ONE of the following questions.

    • Explain how the creation of Nation States during the Renaissance influenced the people of the time.
    • Last one is your choice of topic. Choose something you are interested in and explain why you like it in the form of a thesis.

Remember that each thesis MUST have at least THREE main ideas that ANSWER THE QUESTION. The more details and explanations you include the better your thesis will be. I have included some examples below. Check these before writing your own.

QUESTION: Explain how Coeur d'Alene influences the people of today.
GOOD Thesis ANSWER: Coeur d'Alene is influential because people are drawn there to visit and vacation. Golf is so popular here that many people come to Coeur d'Alene just to play golf. People also enjoy living in Coeur d'Alene.

  • ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 20
Write an essay that answers the DBQ question assigned in class. If you lost your paper or want to look at it on the computer the DBQ is also

  • SAMPLE DBQ TO READ AND USE AS A TEMPLATE

Use the 7 Steps to Writing a Perfect DBQ to help you write this essay. If you get lost go to the essay page and read the suggestions for writing the DBQ. I am working on getting example DBQs up as well. REALLY FOCUS on doing EACH OF THE THINGS LISTED BELOW so we don't have to keep writing these DBQs in March. Remember that your essay is scored based on the following criteria.

    • ANSWER THE QUESTION SPECIFICALLY. Read the question carefully and answer it completely.
    • include at least 3 EXAMPLES OF BIAS OR PREJUDICE (is the source truthful? Why or why not? Does the author have anything to gain or lose from writing? Explain why in your essay.)
    • Use at least half plus one of the documents
    • Make at least 3 groups of documents that have at least 2 documents each. Explain what these documents have in common with each other.
    • Explain, Explain, Explain. Ask why to help you write more.
    • DBQ grading guidelines HERE

Feel free to ask questions on the forum and help each other figure out bias, grouping, and how to answer the quesiton. It's ok that you have never heard of the Greek Revolution. That's how the DBQ is written. The question is testing whether or not you can work with historical documents not your knowledge of the Greek Revolution.

    ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 14
Assignment 1: Write a formal essay (thesis and body paragraphs) that explains why England became and remained a Constitutional Monarchy while France remained an Absolutist Monarchy. Use the chart I handed out to organize your essay into three topics with factual support. Be CERTAIN to answer the question and EXPLAIN as much as you can about WHY England and France developed differently. At the end of each sentence ask yourself, "WHY???" and then answer your question in the next sentences.

Assignment 2: Use the EHAP review and your notes to make a list of the most important two events or developments during each of the English and French Kings rule between 1460 and 1800.

    For example:
Henry VII: won War of Roses; started Modern England

    ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 8
ESSAY: Write an essay describing the political, social, and economic impact of the French Revolution. Use the handout I gave you but DO NOT simply list the information given there. Choose the best examples and EXPLAIN what their impact was or why the impact was not more. What events led to the impact or prevented it from being more important than it was?

This essay will be graded according to the quality of the thesis, the number of facts included and the number of explanations of facts in the essay. EXPLANATIONS are different than ideas because they explain WHY or HOW something happened. Explanations usually have words in them like BECAUSE, SO, THEREFORE, AS A RESULT, THIS CAUSED... Include as many examples as possible (3-4 per paragraph is a good goal to have).

If you are having trouble ask yourself "how?" or "why?" after each sentence you write. For example, the sentence "The French Revolution was important because it moved France away from Absolutism" is an idea that included 3 facts (French Rev, France, Absolutism) but is not explanation. If I add the sentence " Therefore, the people of France gained freedom, liberty and equality which led to greater social freedom." I have now added explanation. At the end of each sentence, see if you can add another sentence of explanation. Use the forum if you have questions and feel free to help each other out.

    ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 2
Memorize the important monarchs of England, Spain, Holy Roman Empire, and France in chronological order. I have made

  • A LIST OF THE MONARCHS TO STUDY
  • . Use your notes to look up the most important 2-3 things each monarch did. The EHAP review is very helpful and you should know quite a few of them off the top of your head. Please study at least 1-2 hours until you really know them well.

    FINAL EXAM:
The final exam will have one essay question chosen from the back page of the handout I gave out in class. Additionally, the final will have 100 multiple choice questions. 20 will come from previously used multiple choice questions available on the assignments section of this website. 20 will come from the EHAP review multiple choice questions available

  • HERE (EHAP REVIEW MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS)
  • . The rest will be from other sources including at least 40 from previous AP tests.

HOW SHOULD I STUDY??? Study the EHAP review, former Multiple choice questions on this website, your notes, make the chart I assigned for homework, do the EHAP review Multiple Choice questions and study the matching exercises that are below.

    Final Exam Day:
We will have another matching quiz during the review period of your final exam. The matching quiz with the best score will be included in the grade book. Here are some of the matching quizzes. I will add the rest soon.

  • CHART INFORMATION: Fill out the chart I gave out in class by listing the rulers for each country under the name of the country and in the decade during which they began their rule. So Henry VII would be listed under the column called England/GB and in the row 1480 since he began his rule in 1485. Do this for the rulers that we have listed in our notes. In the events column, list important events, wars, treaties, books, legislation, speeches or big idea developments for each country. Be sure to put the event in the proper row according to the decade in which it occurred. For example, the Treaty of Westphalia would go in row 1640 since it happened in 1648 and under the column Germany/HRE since the war was most important to Germany. Include at least 75 names and/or events for full credit. If you include more than 75 names and/or events I will give .5 points extra credit for each extra event you include. 20 extra events = 10 points for example.
You can download the form by clicking

  • ASSIGNMENT DUE TUESDAY 1/11
Using the Giant EHAP review, write 4 multiple choice questions from the page number assigned to you in class. If you didn't get a page number in class or forgot, choose a page between 1-10. Two of your multiple choice questions should have answer choices that are 3 words or less and 2 multiple choice questions should have answer choices that are 4 words or more. Please email these questions to me at lchsedmonds@gmail.com Be sure you put a semi-colon at the end of the question and each answer choice (5 semi-colons in all). Also, finish and fix your DBQ from Wednesday about Industrialization in Manchester, England.

    ASSIGNMENT DUE TUESDAY 1/9
Document Based Question (DBQ) Essay - Yes, you must WRITE the full essay for Tuesday. Print out the essay and bring it to class so we can look at them in class. Be sure to read the directions so you know to write a thesis, use at least 6 of the documents (mention them by title or author) and group the documents in at least 2 ways. Also be sure to explain the bias or perspective of the authors of at least 3 documents. If you need help, read the sample essay I put on the back of the DBQ. You can also go to the essay page on the European history site and read the "How to write a DBQ. At the bottom of that page is the handout explaining how to do bias and point of view.
Here are the steps I would follow to write this DBQ.

    • Read the documents and make a two column chart. On one side list the issues the population growth/industrialization brought to Manchester and the documents that bring up each issue (made town dirty is in documents 2,5 and 8 or whatever the docs you choose). Then list the responses to each issue on the other side and the documents that bring up each response. You can use the same document as many times as you need to use it.
    • After making the chart, find issues or responses that multiple documents describe. These issues are important and the documents that all include similar ideas can be included into a group. Remember, a group is 2 or 3 documents that support a similar issue or response. Once you have three issues and the groups of documents that explain each issue you are ready to write your thesis.
    • You thesis must include a general list of issues and reponses to answer the question.
    • The first sentence of each body paragraph need to include an issue and the documents that describe that issue.
    • The rest of your body paragraph will explain the issue and the responses as well as explaining the bias or point of view of the documents you use.
    • A conclusion is not necessary unless you have something else important to say.

For example, if I were writing a DBQ describing America's Social Contract, one of its body paragraphs would look like this.
The Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights all agree that America is founded on a Social Contract(group). The American Social Contract includes the rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" which are guaranteed by the government (Dec. of Ind.). It was natural for Jefferson to include the right to abolish this government if it doesn't guarantee citizen's rights because he was justifying a revolution against the British government (bias). The Constitution further explains how the government and people should work together. Our three branches of government check and balance each other so one branch can control the others. Finally, the Bill of Rights was written to more specifically guarantee individual citizen's rights in the US. Freedom of speech, the right to a trail by jury, the right to not incriminate oneself and a guarentee of state and individual rights are all included. A careful reading of these documents clearly demonstrates early America's desire to balance citizen rights with government power.
Please note that this body paragraph uses 3 documents, has 1 group and 1 bias as well as a sentence or two of explanation for each document. Please do these things in each of the body paragraphs you write. The best place to put a group is in the topic sentence or the last sentence of the paragraph. Also note that I did not quote from each docoment except for a few words. You should not have a quote longer than a line from any document and you are not required to quote at all. Readers are more interested in your explanation of the meaning of the document and your explanation of the Point of View of the author than a simple repitition of the document itself.
If you get stuck please come by and find me on Monday and I will try to help. If you run into trouble just finish the essay. The goal is to finish not to write a perfect essay.

December 27, 2006 As stated in class, we have no homework due immediately after the Christmas break. For those of you who want to do extra credit or prepare for the work we will do during the last three weeks of this semester, here are some ideas. I strongly suggest you not think about school work unless you absolutely must. Breaks are good for everyone. I hope we all return well rested and ready to get back to serious learning.
Study Ideas: Study your vocabulary lists and matching quizzes. We will have a large matching quiz soon after we return from Christmas break. Read over your notes and the EHAP review. We will have a cumulative final exam over everything we have done so far plus the Industrial Revolution and French Revolution. Study well.

Be sure that each of your body paragraphs includes at least 10-15 facts and at least 3 explanatory sentences that relate the facts back to the topic sentence and to the thesis. 10/2 - I ran out of time in class so we don't have a normal homework assignment. Instead, check out this website. Focus on the European history course notes. Read through the notes we studied today on the English Reformation. We will work on body paragraph for homework on Wednesday.

CHECK THE NOTES PAGE FOR THE REFORMATION TIMELINE IF YOU STILL NEED IT TO HIGHLIGHT, 10/4 - Using the Renaissance Education DBQ handed out in class. Also, put each of the documents into one of three categories. A document can be best used for showing Europeans' attitude toward the poor, or Europeans' responses toward the poor or both. Group the documents into one of these three categories. Remember that there isn't necessarily one correct answer. The important thing is that you should be able to defend the choice you make. Think hard as you work.

10/11 - Go to the European course notes page. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on each of the Summary essays (one about the Renaissance and one about the Reformation. Count the number of facts and explanations in each essay and then copy the facts onto another sheet of paper. We have three goals for this assignment.

      • read the essays to begin learning what a good essay sounds like
      • recognize the difference between facts and explanations
      • review the Renaissance and Reformation
