Enlightenment - SPRITE
Enlightenment - Philosophes
S
The Philosophes of the Enlightenment demanded equality and rights for
society as a whole, this was not always accomplished but but some
areas were fairly democratic, when many philosophes were discussing
important things at salons women were given a chance to work a little
and to have more rights
P Philosophes ended up telling the
monarchs to be an enlightened despot or to rule democratically, not a
whole lot of monarchs ruled by popular sovereignty and democracy but
instead became enlightened despots which still meant absolute power
but that that ruler had to help the people use his enlightened
knowledge to be a humanitarian
R The Enlightenment failed
to include God in these new ways of governing and kind of discouraged
religion, led to many unbelievers and agnostics, the philosophes
further weakened the power of the Catholic Church and weakened many
other protestant churches as well
I Philosophes made people think
in very rational and reasonable terms to help figure things out,
after all that is what the philosophes did concerning government,
paved way for new ideas such as liberalism that also thought reason
was good and ideas such as Romanticism that said reason was a load of
crap
T Philosophes also paved the way for new things to be
invented because they introduced reason, The Industrial Revolution
was a based on reason that had its origins form the Scientific
Revolution and the Enlightenment
E Economy not real affected by
the philosophes except it declined because these thinkers were going
around thinking and not working which is not very beneficial to
society economically, enlightened despots were encouraged to make
enlightened decisions about the economy but this did not always
happen
Enlightenment - Enlightened Despots
in Austria
S As a whole society was typically better
because of social and humanitarian reforms that helped society,
people's health, education, and lives were more valued and
enlightened despots attempted to make reforms to help these things
P
Enlightened despots in Austria showed Europe that enlightened
despotism was beneficial and was effective, made Austria very
centralized and organized politically, the despot usually tried to
rule more justly to benefit the people. Because Charles VI made the
pragmatic sanction the war of Austrian succession began. Maria
Theresa was able to win the war against Prussia. Her son Joseph II
became HRE and king of Austria after her death.
R Religion
stayed mostly the same but there was not a very big emphasis on it,
Catholicism was strengthened in Austria, there was generally less
tolerance for other religions; Intellectuals and Philosophes began
studying Deism. Deism states that God created the world but then
backed off and is not involved in the affairs of the world today.
I
Enlightened Despots made philosopohes feel good about themselves
and demonstrated how successful the Enlightenment was, more
humanitarians began to appear and build off of what some of the
enlightened despots accomplished, some intellects felt enlightened
depots should be more democratic which led to the creation of
liberalism and popular sovereignty
T During the prosperous
times of enlightened despots inventors were busy building machines
and building the foundations for the Industrial Revolution, this was
only made possible by the stable economy and government created by
enlightened despots
E At
the start of the 1700s, Charles VI bankrupted the country by fighting
the Spanish War for Succession against Louis XIV. Later Enlightened
Despots helped the economy quite a bit through economic reforms but
if they went to war the economy typically went down, the beneficial
economy created by the despots led to technological advancements and
other large movements later down the road
