Renaissance SPIRTE Review

The Age of the Renaissance 1400-1600

The Renaissance in Florence

Social- Florence changed Europe socially by starting the Renaissance. With the start of the Renaissance in Florence, Ideas spread far beyond its borders, such as Humanism. All of these thoughts originally came from Florence, So the Social Population of Europe was exposed to them, Changing their culture, and Mixing themselves with other people of the same belief.

Politically- Florence changed Europe Politically by their various Ideas. Florence worked to get rid of the City State, which helped many more countries form. Italy was originally all City States, But converted to a country once City States became useless after the Renaissance.

Religion- Florence was the Center of the Roman Catholic Church Crisis, and after that was lead to believe that Humanism was the culture of the coming age.

Ideas- Florence was the Birthplace of so many ideas during the Renaissance. The entire basis to the Renaissance was born in Florence. Humanism, the belief that Humans should come before God, was originally used in Florence, and sparked the Entire Renaissance movement. This certainly had a huge effect on Europe.

Technology- Florence was where the first “Dome” architecture was invented. The Dome was used throughout Europe to signify Cathedrals, and even the Goths used the Dome for their various buildings of significance throughout their cities.

The Artof the Renaissance

S Art was based on humans and not on God, Savonarola died because he told the community to burn their paintings and return to God; Secular women are were seen in paintings for the first time(i.e. "Mona Lisa" by Da Vinci). Art is hung in homes for the first time rather than always in churches.

P Art went against the Catholic Church and the Catholic Church got mad at the Kings for their country not following Catholicism

R Art was taking the interest of religion away from the people, Savanarollam, burned valuables in the Bonfire of the Vanities in Florence

I Humanism, Individualism,Classicalism; the Dome in Florence 1st since Ancient Rom

T Perspective, new oil paints, Gutenberg printing press, canvas adopted

E The Medici family was gaining more power,
and money by banking and used their money for Patronage of artists; artists got paid and can make a career in art for the first time; Savonarola order the Burning of paintings which cost millions of dollars,

Renaissance-Exploration

Social- Exploration changed Europe Socially by uniting many different people through the idea of Religious Unity. A good example of this is the Crusades, Because many different people from around Europe came together as one to go on quests to keep the Holy Land. With so many people from various parts of Europe going, the Europeans were exposed to whole new social ideas. Communities began to believe that there were other countries and other land than just Europe People began to leave the country along with the church to explore the world

Politically- Exploration changed Europe politically by the various small wars that occurred during the Renaissance. With so much new land discovered through Exploration, Many countries made small alliances and treaties to split up the land, and fight others for it. A good example of this was Italy. They Spanish and French new it was there, But with their people heading through Italy and reporting back that Italy was thriving and making large amounts of money through Trade, the French and Spanish had a sudden urge to control the City states located there. This was all brought on by the exploring into their City States and realizing the wealth the Italians had. The kings were getting more people to like them because they were finding other land and trying to get their country more land

Religion- Exploration effected Religion hugely during the Renaissance. With so many people taking new ideas elsewhere, Such as spreading into the North Americas, The explorers spread their Religious Ideas to the Indians, such as Christianity. In some cases, they forced the Native Americans to believe in their Religion, which caused some tension. The church had also lost much power during the Middle ages, So they spread of their ideas through Exploration from the Renaissance helped them regain power globally.

Ideas- With so many explorers entering new Societies that were not as advanced as Renaissance Europe, Ideas that were originally confined to Europe were spread Globally. A good example of this is how Humanism spread almost everywhere after its invention through Explorers telling others about it. The world wasn’t flat

Technology- Same as Ideas, Technology was spread mostly through explorers visiting less advanced countries. The Printing press spread extremely quickly throughout the globe not just because it was such a huge invention and revolutionized the way we spread information, But how the explorers were there to spread the ideas and papers made by it. Boats we developed, Maps Astrolobe, Caraval,

E Countries went in debt because kings were spending money to explore, Spain gained huge amounts of gold and silver which caused inflation and hurt the economy of Spain and Europe in the long run.

Renaissance Nation States

S Society was safer and more centralized as a whole, more civil rights because of more direct say and more civilized times
P Increased monarch's power because of centralized power, led to the rise of absolutism, increased bureaucracies, Protected people better during war because power was not fragmented, better laws
R Church's power declined because of monarch's increased power, people felt less dependent on the church because of humanism and a safer life
I All this stability caused people to wonder about obscure things because they had leisure time and were not fighting for their lives all the time. Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution are examples.
T All this stability caused people to want to make their lives better and to explore the world better so inventions and technology are created, telescope, printing press, clocks, gunpowder, microscope, and match are just a few inventions.
E With the government and society so stable economy starts to take off, mercantilism and increased trade fill up the coffers of the new nation-states. Also the new inventions of these nation-states make them profitable

The Renaissance in Rome

S- Medici family moves to Rome, Popes began having illegitimate children,
individuals began to be center of attention, Savonarola changed the way
people focused their attention on themselves-not as much about appearance. 1510 Peter Henlein invents the pocket watch; 1568: Bottled beer is invented in London 1591: Sir John Harington invents the flush toilet in England

P- Medici family changed because they bought their way into power, Treaty of
Tordesillas, Julius II made agreement with King Louis XII/Maximillian and
Ferdinand/ and the League of Cambral to go against the Venetian Republic,
people with money became patron s and therefore gained more power, Leo X-
fought the Turks at Turkey

R- Savonarola preached to give up the vanities, still a God to please, more
individuals became important, Pope's began having mistress' and children,
rebuilding of Rome by Nicholas V, commission of Sistine Chapel by Sixtus IV,
Alexander VI Rodrigo Borgia-had Florence kill Savonarola and used all money
to help his son Cesar Borgia

I- more individualism, patronage to the arts and artists, Papal System
seemed bad due to Alexander VI, rebuilding of Rome, building of Sistine
Chapel and rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica, sales of indulgences was also
a new idea, Machiavelli, Erasmus, Castiglione

T- building and rebuilding of churches and Rome itself, Pope's began using
money for other uses instead of for God or anything related to God, more
warfare began as well

E- gained more money due to Medici family moving there, gained more land due
to more wars waged upon neighboring areas, patrons, banks, population
increase due to better things being offered in Rome; Gun is beginning to be developed
