Chapter Summary:

Cotton and slavery were still popular in the South. Tobacco, wheat, flour, iron, and coal were ever-increasing. Slavery was a major focus of plantations. Through slave trade, black families were often separated. Plantation women were expected to do weaving and sewing. The white men were the masters in this paternalistic system. The slaves lived in simple houses and were expected to work in the fields during all daylight hours. Many slave owners did not care for their slaves and often said that they were "lazy." Sometimes slaves would revolt like Nat Turner of Virginia did in 1831. The whites were warped by slavery-it changed their lives.

The North had many industrial advancements with mass production techniques for clocks, pistols, rifles, and locks. Many states passed incorporation laws. The National Academy of Science was formed in 1863. Elias Howe invented the sewing machine in 1846. Many immigrants from Ireland arrived to fill the factory jobs. Commonwealth verses Hunt in 1842 established the legality of labor unions. The nation continued to export raw materials and import manufactured goods. Whaling advanced along with the construction of the Clipper. Steamships, railroads, and canals motivated travel and trade. John Deere invented the steel plowshare.
