Summary:

Why did the Union Army win the war? The North had 97% of the countries weapons, a government, a strong Abe leader, railroads, navy, manufacturing, money, and the big wining factor, a population of 20 million. Compared to the South's 3% of the weapons, starting from scratch politically and economically, and population of 9 million; the North had a hearty head start. But the Confederate Army put up a hefty fight, and with the help of Robert E. Lee, they fought for their independence (on their home turf) with a similar intensity of the folk of the Revolutionary War. At Appomattox Court House, Lee certainly felt defeated, but Grant (under the instruction of Lincoln) created a "Welcome Home" atmosphere, allowing the Southerners to go home free of treason, and with their horses. The Civil ~ar created: hatred, corruption/materialism form wartime conditions, death of slavery, maturing of economy, eliminated future possibility of succession', and increased popularity of republican government. ~ But WE lost the war. The Civil War marked the loss of America's innocence; fr 1865 on out, America's root principal-freedom-has been eroded to the point tha~ the government controls it's people's minds through compulsory schooling.
