      ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 21:
Use the 7 Steps to Writing a Perfect DBQ to help you write this essay. If you get lost go to the essay page and read the suggestions for writing the DBQ. I am working on getting example DBQs up as well. REALLY FOCUS on doing EACH OF THE THINGS LISTED BELOW so we don't have to keep writing these DBQs in March. Remember that your essay is scored based on the following criteria.

      • ANSWER THE QUESTION SPECIFICALLY. Read the question carefully and answer it completely.
      • include at least 3 EXAMPLES OF BIAS OR PREJUDICE (is the source truthful? Why or why not? Does the author have anything to gain or lose from writing? Explain why in your essay.)
      • Use at least half plus one of the documents

      • DBQ grading guidelines HERE

Feel free to ask questions on the forum and help each other figure out bias, grouping, and how to answer the quesiton. It's ok that you don't already know a lot about the question That's how the DBQ is written. The question is testing whether or not you can work with historical documents not your knowledge of the industrial Revolution.

If you were on the band/basketball trip, come see me on Monday and I will give you a copy of the DBQ. If someone wants to scan the DBQ and put it on the forum that would be nice. Also, remember to only spend about 1 hour on this assignment. JUST DO IT!

      ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 13
Study the Dynasty lists and memorize at least three important people, events, or ideas from each of the Asian Dynasties. I will try to put up study guides so you don't ahve to go through your notes as much but I make no promises. The Top 10 Lists on the Notes Page are GREAT study guides for this assignment. On Tuesday, we will have a quiz over 2 randomly chosen dynasties from China, India, Mesopotamia and the Muslim Middle East. Study them all so you will be ready no matter which Dynasty is chosen. If I create study guides I will put them here.

    • The China Study Guide
    • is ready. The bold information is the most important to memorize fiirst.
    • The India Study Guide
    • is also ready. The bold information is the most important to memorize fiirst.
    • The Muslim Study Guide
    • is now ready. The bold information is the most important to memorize fiirst.
    • The Mesopotamia Study Guide
    • is now ready. The bold information is the most important to memorize fiirst.

      ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 9
Choose an important topic, person, or idea and research it on the internet. Once you have gathered your information, choose the 3 most important ideas or results or developments to communicate about your topic. These ideas are the basis for your thesis. Then write a body paragraph about each portion of your thesis. The essay should be well written since the ideas are not confusing. Focus on EXPLANATIONS in your writing. EXPLANATIONS are different than ideas because they explain WHY or HOW something happened. Explanations usually have words in them like BECAUSE, SO, THEREFORE, AS A RESULT, THIS CAUSED... Include as many examples as possible (3-4 per paragraph is a good goal to have).

If you are having trouble ask yourself "how?" or "why? or "what did this cause to happen" after each sentence you write. For example, the sentence "The French Revolution was important because it moved France away from Absolutism" is an idea that included 3 facts (French Rev, France, Absolutism) but is not explanation. If I add the sentence "Therefore, the people of France gained freedom, liberty and equality which led to greater social freedom." I have now added an explanation. At the end of each sentence, see if you can add another sentence of explanation. Use the forum if you have questions and feel free to help each other out.

Anything during the Ming or Qing Empires are good to write about. Here are some ideas to get you started. In the Ming, important Emperors, the Admiral, the ships the Admiral used, why China stopped sailing and became isolationist, what other places thought about China's "trade mission". Porcelin, China, literacy in Ming, Ming printing press, Japanese Pirates, Ming era art, Ming literature, how does the Ming compare to European Renaissance? the Forbidden City, how the Ming took over from the Yuan, why did the Ming fall to the Qing? What was the famine like that led to the failure? Wikipedia and google are good places to use for research. More about the European contact with the Ming and the trade with Europe or Asia are also good to study.

The Qing might focus on the spheres of influence, one country's sphere of influence, isolationism during the Qing, Qing Emperors, Taiping Rebellion, White Lotus Rebellion, Korean Independence, Japan taking Taiwan, France taking Vietnam, art and literature under the Qing, Opium trade in China, the Opium wars, British Opium trade, Britain taking Hong Kong and many others. Choose one you like and try not to all choose the same ones. Unique is good. Enjoy.

      ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 5:
Study the Dynasties in Meso-America, Europe and Africa and be ready for a quiz on Monday over these dynasties similar to the one we did in class over the Asian Dynasties.
ESSAY QUESTION: Compare and contrast the reason for success and failure of European expansion around the world. Compare the extent of European influence in South America to their influence in China and/or Japan. Be sure to include information about economics (slavery, trade, technology and/or raw materials), society (slavery, disease, Columbian Exchange, religion) and politics (direct control, indirect control, influence or little influence at all).

      ASSIGNMENT DUE FEBRUARY 1:
Using the place you were assigned in class (China, Japan, India, South America, Central America, Africa or California area), study the first contact Europeans had with the culture you were assigned. Who came, where did they go and what were they looking for or doing. How did their presence change the local ESP? Please type a one half to one page summary of what you find out. Be as specific as you can. The search term (European expansion to ______) is useful. So if European arrival at_____. Missionaries are often first arrivals so be ready to talk about them in class and then talk about how the natives were used for labor around the world. If they weren't used for labor how did the Europeans trade with them? Each person will be asked to speak in class so come to class PREPARED please.

HOMEWORK DUE on Tuesday the Day of the Final
Study Tips for the Final Exam:
      1. Memorize the study guide.
      2. Prepare for the essay using the websites

    • HERE (Final Exam Essay Questions and Helpful Links)

    • 3. Memorize the eras for each civilization. Click
    • on THIS WORLD HISTORY CHART
    • for all of the civilization eras and dates.
      4. Remember, for all of your finals, study a little bit at a time with specific goals for each study session and DO NOT procrastinate.
EXTRA CREDIT Options: Compare the list of Top 10s on this webpage to the list of Empires on the chart above. For extra credit write a TOP 10 List for a era or place that is not already on the webpage on the Top 10 list. Include the Top 10 Events, people, wars, ideas, or other developments in the country's history along with 1-2 line explanations for each. Also include 3 quotes from each place or time period. Finish with a descriptive paragraph explaining how the place or time changed the area or time in important ways. MUST BE TYPED AND EMAILED TO lchsedmonds@gmail.com Worth 20 points (same as 1 homework assignments).
Or, choose any ruler from any era pre-1450 in our 1st semester notes and write a summary of their rule. This summary is similar to the TOP 10 lists except its a Top 3 list. List and briefly describe the most important 3 accomplishments of the ruler and then a quote by the ruler or about the ruler. Finally, write a paragraph explaining the ruler's impact on their era and civilization. MUST BE TYPED AND EMAILED TO lchsedmonds@gmail.com Worth 15 points
Or, type an original one page essay summarizing the economic/technological, social/religious and political/war aspects of one of the societies listed on the World Civilization Chart. DO NOT PLAGERIZE. MUST BE TYPED AND EMAILED TO lchsedmonds@gmail.com Worth 30-50 points depending on quality.
I will probably put a limit of 100 points on the extra credit so don't do more than that until we take our final and I decide how many points of EC I will accept.

      HOMEWORK DUE JANUARY 19
Using the list of eras within each civilization that you did for homework for January 9th, add accomplishments and rulers to this outline of eras. Include at least 3 items for each era. One ruler for each era is a good goal but you can substitute an accomplishment for the ruler if finding a ruler is slowing you down. The goal for this assignment is to be able to answer the questions "What did this era do that mattered to future societies?" and "Who was responsible for doing it?" Use your notes and the internet to complete the list. You do not need to include dates but they are helpful if you have them easily available. Typing this is a good idea because you will probably want to add to it later. Using my notes page - especially the Top 10 lists and the regional summaries will help this assignment go quickly. If you get stuck just type in the name of the era and accomplishments on the internet and you will find information for each timeperiod we listed. If you are working on the computer and can cut and paste easily put in as many accomplishments as you can easily find for each. 3 is a minimum not a maximum. Exceptional numbers of accomplishments (without being ridiculous) will be rewarded with extra credit.

      HOMEWORK DUE JANUARY 17
Write the DBQ essay for the Silver DBQ. Doing the bias and grouping is only the first step. YOU MUST ALSO WRITE THE ESSAY.

      HOMEWORK DUE JANUARY 10
Read the DBQ I handed out in class. Write the main point for each document, the bias for at least 5 documents and place the documents into at least 3 groups based on their characteristics. For each group, please explain why you placed the documents together. Finally, list 3 types of documents you wish had been included on the DBQ and how they could have helped you answer the question.
Or, write an answer to the DBQ question. Be sure to include:

      • a thesis with a short and complete answer to the question
      • A main idea from the thesis and a group of documents (2-3) in each topic sentence of each body paragraph. A sentence with groups in it would look something like this: "Louis XIV, Henry VIII, and Philip II, according to their speeches, all agree that absolutism creates stability in a country and builds the country into a world power". I would use that sentence as topic sentence for this hypothetical essay and then include explanation of each of the documents and the bias for the writers. Then the end of the paragraph would sum up how the main point supports my thesis.
      • 4 examples of bias or point of view in the essay as a whole
      • use ALL documents provided. You may use documents more than once in paragraph and in groups
      • at least one type of document you wish you had in each body paragraph

Go to the essay page on this website for more information about DBQs and using point of view/bias in your essays.

      HOMEWORK DUE JANUARY 8
      Go to

Be sure to follow the names as we called them and to not add dynasties we did not study. Our next assignment will be to add rulers and accomplishments to this list so if you hand write these please leave 3-4 lines of space as you go.

      • 1. Write a TOP 10 List for a era or place that is not already on the webpage on the Top 10 list. Include the Top 10 Events, people, wars, ideas, or other developments in the country's history along with 1-2 line explanations for each. Also include 3 quotes from each place or time period.
